Abstract
Anthraquinones having the general formula <FORM:1124439/C2/1> wherein n is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 and the anthraquinone nucleus may contain halogen, aryl, aroyl, tertiary alkyl, and carbonyl substituents, and radicals which form anellated quinoid rings with the anthraquinone nucleus, are prepared by treating at superatmospheric pressures an anthrone having the general formula <FORM:1124439/C2/2> wherein R is C1-C4 alkyl but not tertiary butyl and two vicinal R groups may form a cycloaliphatic ring, n is as above, and the anthrone nucleus may be substituted as above, with 5 to 45% by weight nitric acid at 150-250 DEG C., the nitric acid being used in at least a stoichiometric amount with reference to the anthrone. Examples 1-6 describe the preparation of mono- and di-chloro anthraquinone mono- and di-carboxylic acids, and Example 7 the preparation of 1,4-dichloro anthraquinone.
