Abstract

Water-insoluble anthraquinone dyes and mixtures thereof are prepared by acylating an anthraquinone compound of formula <FORM:1123173/C4-C5/1> in which R and R1 are each independently hydrogen, or lower alkyl radicals, n is 1, 2 or 3 and the benzene ring W may contain substituents other than halogen atoms, nitro, amino, carboxylic acid or sulphonic acid groups, in aqueous medium with an acylating agent or agents derived from one or more acids of formula YCOOH in which Y is an alipatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aryl radical free from carboxylic acid and sulphonic acid radicals. When more than one acylating agent is used, the anthraquinone compound as above is treated with one acylating agent followed by the other when the first acylation is completed. It is not essential to acylate all the hydroxy groups, dispering agents and inorganic salts which improve physical form of the product may be added to the reaction mixture. The dyes obtained give blue shades on polyester material.
