In a washing machine the washing chamber 2 is resiliently suspended from the housing 1 and is connected thereto by shock absorbers 5 formed by fractionally engaged relatively movable parts 9, 10, locking means 11 being provided which can prevent relative movement of these parts. Washing chamber 2 is suspended by springs 4 and contains a rotatable drum 3. Discs 9 are of high friction material and are carried on laminations 6 attached to housing 1, plate 10 being secured 'to chamber 2. To prevent vibration of the rank, pin 11 is passed through registering openings in laminations 6 and plate 10.
