1,122, 885. Sampling gases for analysis. INSTITUT DE RECHERCHES DE LA SIDERURGIE FRANCAISE. May 1, 1967 [May 16, 1966], No. 19954/67. Heading G1B. A device for withdrawing gas samples from a gas flow in a conduit, e.g. in a blast furnace, comprises a cylindrical tube 16 exterior to the conduit on which is mounted by way of a sleeve 19 a steel tube 20 projecting into the conduit and carrying a tip 22, a porous tube 23 being clamped between the sleeve 19 and tip 22 and the tube 20 being apertured along its length, so that when a suction pump is coupled to a connection 15 a gas sample representative of the gases flowing in the conduit will be obtained. To this end the porous tube 23 is arranged to project to at least the centre line of the conduit and thus the sample obtained will be representative of the whole gas flow and not just the gases flowing near the walls of the conduit. A semi-circular section shield (not shown) is provided along the length of the tube 23 to protect the upstream side of the tube from the effects of fine dust in the gas stream striking the porous tube and blocking it up. An electrical heater 25 is provided inside the tube 20 to prevent moisture condensing in the porous tube 23. The porous tube itself may be of porous bronze, ceramics or asbestos. The device is arranged so that it may be slid into position in the conduit through a suitable closable valve, and where the device is used in a vertical conduit it is arranged to project upwardly at an oblique angle therein to prevent solid materials collecting on the device.
