Abstract

1,122,368. Protective arrangements. INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. Ltd. 19 July, 1967 [5 Sept., 1966], No. 39615/66. Heading H2K. A superconducting element 1, e.g. a magnet coil, has a shunt resistance R 2 , and an air break switch S 2 incorporating metal are separators is connected in series with the resistance R 2 and element 1. A coil 5, inductively linked with the magnetic field produced by element 1 and connected to an amplifier and control unit 6, detects the occurrence of a fault in element 1 and produces an output from unit 6 to operate switch S 2 . The voltage generated across the contacts of switch S 2 is equal to the product of the normal current through element 1 and the value of the shunt resistance R 2 . A homopolar generator 2 supplies current to element 1 through a charging resistor R 1 under the control of a starting switch S 1 . Generator 2 is driven by an electric motor and the field current is supplied by a coil 3 from a control unit 4 coupled to charging resistor R 1 to receive a voltage feed-back signal determining the growth of current in the circuit after starting switch S 1 has been opened following the running of the generator 2 up to full speed at zero output.
