Abstract
112,199. Riddle, W. March 5, 1917. Cleaning.-For the production of blasting-holes in solid " metal bottoms " or metallic accumulations in blast furnaces or steel furnaces, an oxygen blowpipe is used, together with small coal or other combustible material which is contained in an open clay pocket or container b, Fig. 2, applied against the "metal bottom" or accumulation, so as to obtain a " bite " on the mass of metal. The burning out of the hole to the required depth is continued under the effect of the oxygen of the blowpipe e. The container may be in the form of a metal or other tube h applied with a packing of clay as shown in Fig. 3. A lamp d is used at starting, to ignite the coal.
