Abstract

23,002. Nicholas, C., and Bateman, B. G. Oct. 8. Crucible furnaces.-A furnace for melting scrap metal &c. consists of a hopper or receiver a set above a shallow crucible b, from which the metal overflows into another crucible c. The furnace is heated by coke &c. introduced through an aperture l and burned upon a grate j, or by oil or gas, the combustion products passing away through flues n. The crucible b is mounted on blocks f and on the ledge g, and may be tipped about the ledge g, so as to pour out the last of the molten metal, by means of a bar &c. introduced through the doorway m. Dross may be removed, and the metal stirred, by instruments introduced through the doorway p. The crucible b may have a deeper lip ; in this case, the molten metal is withdrawn by piercing a plug in the bottom. The metal is withdrawn from the crucible c by similarly piercing a plug q adjacent to a spout in the side of the furnace.
