Abstract

A cleansing composiion which is stable in both dilute and concentrated aqueous solution and in said solution has a pH higher than 10, contains at least one halogenite of sodium or potassium and at least one surface-active agent which is a saturated aliphatic compound or an arylaliphatic compound having a saturated aliphatic moiety, condensed with an oxyethylene chain comprising at least 8 ethoxy groups and having a terminal hydroxyl group which is esterified with a non-oxidizable organic or mineral acid, e.g. phosphoric or sulphuric acid. The surface-active agent may be the potassium salt of the phosphoric diester of nonyl phenol condensed with 10 molecules of ethylene oxideALSO:A composition suitable for use in the bleaching of fibres, fabrics and pulp, and which is stable in both dilute and concentrated aqueous solution and in said solution has a pH higher than 10, contains at least one halogenite of sodium or potassium and at least one surface-active agent which is a saturated aliphatic compound or an arylaliphatic compound having a saturated aliphatic moiety, condensed with an oxyethylene chain comprising at least 8 ethoxy groups and having a terminal hydroxyl group which is esterified with a non-oxidisable organic or mineral acid e.g. phosphoric or sulphuric acid. The surface active agent may be the potassium salt of the phosphoric diester of nonyl phenol condensed with 10 molecules of ethylene oxide.ALSO:A composition suitable for use in combatting microbiological sediments in the manufacture of paper, and which is stable in both dilute and concentrated aqueous solution and in said solution has a pH higher than 10, contains at least one halogenite of sodium or potassium and at least one surface-active agent which is a saturated aliphatic compound or an arylaliphatic compound having a saturated aliphatic moiety, condensed with an oxyethylene chain comprising at least 8 ethoxy groups and having a terminal hydroxyl group which is esterified with a non-oxidisable organic or mineral acid e.g. phosphoric or sulphuric acid.
