Abstract

1,121,396. Card indexes. W. KOLLER. 15 March, 1966 [1 April, 1965], No. 11254/66. Heading B6E. In a card index consisting of a case with a drawer for index cards, and means for unlocking the drawer and releasing the index card selected by means of a key, a single operation of a selector key will unlock the drawer and select the desired card, and that card will be freely available for writing on, or withdrawal from the drawer. The card index comprises a case 4, a drawer 2 open at the rear and acted upon by a push spring 12, and the index cards 1 are of resiliently elastic material. The cards (Fig. 1) have aligned side recesses (15) near the front for retention by pins 6 on the base of the drawer, and the front edges of the cards have selector recesses (20). The base of the case 4 has two cams (5) which protrude through two parallel longitudinal slots 3 in the drawer 2. Mounted in slots in the top of the case are several selector keys 7, each having a pin 8 and shoulders 19, and urged upwardly by a spring 13. The drawer is retained in the closed condition by a pawl 10 which engages, by the action of a spring 17, a recess 11 in the side of the drawer, the pawl being slidably mounted in control rail 9 which can be pivoted when any key 7 is depressed, to release the pawl 10, and allow the spring 12 to open the drawer. With the drawer closed (Fig. 2), the cams 5 urge the front ends of the resilient index cards upwardly adjacent the pins 8 on the selector keys 7. If a key 7 is now depressed, its pin 8 presses on the appropriate index card within the recesses (20), and bends that card, and any others below that card, so that the pins 6 engage the side recesses (15) and retain the cards. During the further downward movement of the key 7, the control rail 9 is tipped to release the drawer 2, and the latter than moves outwardly of the case 4 (Fig. 3). The desired index card 1 is thus fully exposed for writing on, or for complete withdrawal. In a modification (Figs. 5 and 6), the pins (8) of the keys 7 are hookshaped and arcuate at their free ends (25). The case 4 for the drawer 2 can be the base fitting of a telephone, with a pedestal surface and base fillets.
