Abstract
Compositions comprise (A) a thermoplastic polymer having polar groups and (B) a copolymer having (1) units of formula <FORM:1121319/C3/1> and (2) units of formula <FORM:1121319/C3/2> where R1 is hydrogen or alkyl, and R2 is a hydrocarbyl group in which the carbon atom attached to the C=O group is a quaternary carbon atom, and optionally (3) units of formula <FORM:1121319/C3/3> or <FORM:1121319/C3/4> where R3 is hydrogen or alkyl, R4 is a hydrocarbyl group in which the carbon atom attached to the C = O group is a primary, secondary, tertiary or aromatic-type atom, R5 is hydrogen or alkyl, and X is hydroxyl or a metal alcoholate group. The polymers of category A are homo or copolymers of vinyl halides, e.g. with vinyl esters (which are preferred and exemplified) vinylidene halides, acrylic or methacrylic acid esters, or acrylonitrile. The copolymers of category B may also contain units derived from other monomers, those specified being acrylic, methacrylic, fumaric, maleic, itaconic, aconitic and vinyl sulphonic acids and their metal salts, vinyl benzoate and chloride, vinylidene cyanide and chloride, vinylmethyl ether, acrylonitrile, norbornene and norbornadiene. The units (2) may be derived from esters of pivalic acid, 1,1,3,3 - tetramethylbutanecarboxylic acid, 1,2-dimethyl - 1 - isopropyl - propane carboxylic acid, 1,1,4 - trimethylpentane carboxylic acid, and esters of acids having 9-19 carbon atoms and derived from cracked petroleum fractions. The units (3) are suitably derived from vinyl- or isopropenyl esters of acetic, propionic, isobutyric, 2 - ethylhexanoic, and benzoic acids. The units (4) are derived from the partial or complete hydrolysis of the ehtylene-ester copolymers. The compositions are prepared by mixing the two polymers in the solid state at elevated temperatures in mixing and/or kneading devices, preferably in two stages, one at a low temperature and one at a higher temperature. Polymers (A) may be obtained by conventional techniques, while polymers (B) may be obtained by the processes described in Specification 1,094,087 and in Specification 1,086,036. In the examples, vinyl chloride homopolymers and copolymers with vinyl esters are compounded with various ethylene-ester copolymers, together with 1,3,5-trimethyl-2,4,6-tris - (3,5 - di - t - butyl - 4 - hydroxybenzyl) benzene as antioxidant and di-(n-butyl)-tin-b -mercaptopropionate as stabilizer.
