Abstract

Copolymers having (i) unit of the formula <FORM:1086036/C3/1> (ii) units of the formula <FORM:1086036/C3/2> (iii) units of the formula <FORM:1086036/C3/3> and (iv), optionally, units derived from other ethylenically unsaturated monomers, where R1, R3 are hydrogen or alkyl, R2 is a hydrocarbyl group whose carbon atom bound to the C=O group is quaternary or saturated tertiary, and R4 is a hydrocarbyl group whose carbon atom bound to the C=O group is primary or saturated secondary, are prepared by copolymerizing ethylene with the corresponding vinyl- or 1-alkyl-vinyl esters and, optionally, with other monomers. Suitable esters from which units (ii) are derived are those of pivalic acid, 1,1,3,3 - tetramethyl - butane carboxylic acid, 1,2 - dimethyl - 1 - isopropyl - propanecarboxylic acid, and 1,1,4-trimethylpentanecarboxylic acid. Suitable esters from which units (iii) are derived are those of acetic and oleic acids. Suitable monomers from which units (iv) are derived are acrylic-, methacrylic-, fumaric-, maleic-, itaconic-, aconitic-, and vinyl-sulphonic acids, metal salts of these acids, vinyl benzoate, acrylonitrile, vinylidene cyanide, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl methyl ether, norbornene, and norbornadiene. When such units (iv) which have an acid groups are incorporated the copolymers may be reacted with metal compounds to yield the salts. The copolymerizations are carried out using conventional techniques. The new copolymers may be compounded with pigments, plasticizers, waxes, dyes, resins and fillers, and may be vulcanized, In the examples, details of various polymerizations in an autoclave are given, there being successive addition of ethylene and rotation of the autoclave. In the examples, ethylene and vinyl acetate are copolymerized with the following monomers (1-16) vinyl pivalate, with norbornadiene and acrylic acid as a fourth monomer in (2) and (4-5) respectively, (17-22) esters of various acids of 9-19 carbon atoms derived from cracked olefin fractions. Various of these copolymers are vulcanized using a standard recipe with triallyl cyanurate as vulcanizing agent and dicumyl peroxide as an activator.
