Abstract

1,120,972. Web coating apparatus. BLACK CLAWSON CO. 1 Nov., 1965 [2 Nov., 1964], No. 46199/65. Heading D1L. A method of coating webs comprises passing the web over the open top of a trough which is supplied with coating liquid and resiliently urging the trough towards the web with a force which balances the hydrodynamic force tending to move the trough and web apart. In the preferred embodiment for carrying out the method, the trough, which extends transversely of the web, comprises a tube 21 to which coating liquid is supplied and a bar 30 having a longitudinal groove 32 forming an open-topped trough. The tube is in communication with the groove by means of longitudinally spaced aligned holes provided in the base of the groove and the top of the tube. The tube is carried by plates 43 which are pivotally connected at 76 via arms 45, 75 to a diaphragm air motor 70 which supplies the force urging the trough towards the web 16 which is supported by a backing roll 14. The angle of incidence of the surfaces 39, 40 of the bar 30 with the web 16 may be varied by means of arms 56 pivoted at 55 and secured to arms 45, the pivot being carried on a block 65 mounted for sliding movement at 45‹ to the vertical, and also vertical movement on the side frame 10. A doctor blade 84 is provided, mounted for pivotal movement between operative and inoperative positions by means of arms 95, 88 and a diaphragm air motor 94. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 4-13 (not shown), the coating trough is mounted to apply coating to a web travelling in one of two opposite directions. The trough is mounted between the side frames of the apparatus, each end being mounted on end plates having pivoted arms (125), (146). A balancing spring (166) is provided to counteract the weight of the coating assembly and the force counteracting the hydrodynamic force between the trough and web is supplied by diaphragm air motor (175). The trough is pivoted between operative and inoperative positions by means of air piston motor (145) connected to arm (146), Fig. 5 (not shown). The diaphragm air motors (175) are selectively operated according to the direction of web travel. Selectively operated doctor blade assemblies (122), (123), Fig. 4 (not shown), are also provided. Each assembly is mounted for vertical movement and pivotal movement to vary the angle of incidence of the blade with the web. The ends of the coating trough are provided with edge dams and coating liquid which overflows is deflected into a pan for recirculation.
