Abstract

An N-alkylated copolymide elastomer suitable for use in the manufacture of elastomeric yarns, is produced by the reaction of N,N1diisobutyl hexamethylene diamine, sebacic acid, 11-amino undecanoic acid and caprolactam.ALSO:Synthetic elastomeric yarns having reduced surface friction are produced by coating at least one uncoated synthetic elastomeric filament with a synthetic fibre forming non-elastomeric polymer. The coating may be effected by successively treating the filament or filaments with the polymer forming ingredients dissolved in substantially immiscible solvents. Polyamides may be formed from a diacid chloride and a diamine in the presence of an acid acceptor, e.g. sodium carbonate, polysulphonamides from a disulphonyl chloride and a diamine, polyureas from a diisocyanate and a diamine and polyester from a diacid chloride and a dihydroxy benzene. One of the solvents is preferably water and the other solvent may be methylene chloride carbon tetrachloride or chloroform, the first solvent applied preferable being a swelling agent for the elastomeric filaments treated as well as a solvent for the polymer forming ingredient. The coating is preferably applied to the filaments in the drawn state. It may be applied to the wet-spun, dry-spun or melt-spun filaments after spinning prior to winding on the package. If the filaments are drawn after coating they crimp spontaneously in the relaxed condition. The treating solutions may be applied by passing the filaments in contact with the solution at one end of a capillary tube preferably having channeled or formed therein a grove along which the filaments are passed, the other end communicating with a constant head reservoir of the solution. Spinning finish applied to the filaments is removed prior to the coating. Filaments made from polymers formed by the reaction of a polyester or copolyester, a diol or diamine and an aromatic or aliphatic diisocyanate, or from an N-alkylated copolyamide elastomer formed by the reaction of N, N\sv-diisobutyl hexamethylene diamine, sebacic acid, 11-amino undecanoic acid and caprolactam may be treated. The treated yarns may be used in the manufacture of surgical hose.
