Abstract
Water-cooling equipment is descaled and cleaned by adding to the circulating water, whose velocity is at least 3 feet per second, an acid, which may be hydrochloric or sulphuric acid, in an amount of from 0.1% to 3% of the water by weight, together with from 0.1% to 2% together by volume of the acid of a corrosion inhibitor and a wetting agent. The water is circulated at not more than 9 feet per second, and is preferably mixed with the cleaning chemicals in a mixing tank in the water circuit. The corrosion inhibitor and wetting agent may be provided by a single reagent, and be an amine or mixture of amines, a mercaptan, a heterocyclic nitrogen compound or a urea or thiourea. Nitrogen containing cationic agents such as C12 + amines, alkylamine and quaternary ammonium compounds may be used, and alkanol-amine reaction products are stated to be particularly suitable. Where required the acid effluent from the cooler may be neutralised by adding alkaline material as it emerges.
