Abstract

In a method of harvesting agricultural produce, the crop is fed directly into polythene bags which are then partly evacuated and heat-sealed by apparatus mounted on the harvester. In the form shown, a conventional forage-harvester is provided with an outlet-shoot 9 which is bent over to receive the bags at its lower end, the bags being in pairs 12, 13 and the lower end of the shoot having a flap-valve 14 so that the bags can be filled sequentially. To relieve air-pressure a sliding port 28, 29 is mounted at the bend in the shot so that the crop enters the bag under gravity only. When filled, each bag is placed on a heat-sealing head 18 to which is attached a pipe 20 from a vacuum tank 21 evacuated by a pump 22 driven by a motor 23, the motor also driving a dynamo 24 which charges the batteries 19 supplying current to the heatsealing head 18. The filled bags are delivered to the ground through a shoot 26 having a manually-operable door 27. The same arrangement may also be applied to a combine-harvester, the grain being sealed in polythene bags.
