A bar loading mechanism for a working machine such as a lathe or swaging machine, comprises a receiver 11 for holding the bars 12 side by side, means 14, 34, 35 for feeding the bars horizontally, axially and in a direction 50 parallel to the bars in the receiver, an outlet runway 15 from the receiver inclined downwardly towards the feeding means, a stop surface 15a engageable by the lowermost bar in the receiver, and an eccentric roller 17 rotatable to lift the lowermost bar over the stop surface 15a and on to the runway 15. The bars in the receiver are located axially by a forward abutment surface 13, and a pair of runways 15 are adjustably supported on bearing blocks 10 mounted on pedestals 1, 2. The height of these blocks is adjustable by a hand wheel 4 and they carry grooved rollers 14 for receiving the lowermost bar 12 from the runway 15. Two lifting eccentrics 17 carried by the blocks 10 are rotated in unison by shaft 23 driven through chain (22), Fig. 4 (not shown), by a driving unit (20). After raising the lowermost bar the eccentrics 17 are lowered and this causes spring-loaded pressure rollers (33) to press upon the bar 12 then located on the rollers 14. These pressure rollers are driven by unit (20) and their height is adjustable by screws (29). The formed end of the bar 12 is gripped against a driven feed roller 35 and fed forwardly thereby to the second feed roller 34. Both rollers 34, 35 are driven by a further driving unit 37, Fig. 2 (not shown), and have resilient counter pressure rollers 33 acting from above. The bar is thus fed axially to a clamping device 47 of the working machine 52. When the end of the bar passes a roller switch 49 a further feeding step is initiated. The length of a bar fed into the machine may be controlled by switches 46 driven by a switch disc 45.
