Abstract

1,119,826. Momentum power-storing apparatus. A. V. CROWTHER. 23 July, 1965 [17 Sept., 1964], No. 37930/64. Heading F2X. A momentum power-storing apparatus comprises a first shaft 4 connected to a drive unit 29 and rigid with an inner rotor 7 and shook absorber 8, a second shaft 17 rigid with an outer rotor 19, and a control unit 20 for providing intermittent connection between the shook absorber and the outer rotor, the control unit having a member operable by centrifugal force to provide the connection when the speed of the outer rotor drops below a predetermined value. The shaft 17 drives a generator 33 and is driven by a motor 23 during starting until the inner and outer rotors have, for example, attained speeds of 15,000 and 6000 r.p.m., respectively. A centrifugal weight 45 actuates a pad 52 through gearing 46, 48 when the speed of the outer rotor falls so that the pad engages the rim of the shock absorber which is carried - by radial spring levers. To ensure that engagement is maintained for sufficient time to speed up the outer rotor, a pin 61 on the wheel 46 is held by a recess in a spring-loaded lever 60. The weight 45 is urged toward the position in which the pad 52 engages the shock absorber by a spring 54 and is neld away from this position during starting by a catch 56 which is reset each time the apparatus is started.
