Abstract

Copolymers of trioxane which contain catalyst, monomeric starting material and unstable chain segments are worked up by rapidly melting the crude polymer together with an activator for the catalyst while being intensely kneaded and is then conveyed rapidly in the molten condition through a zone under vacuum in a degassing apparatus. Specified comonomers are cyclic acetals, cyclic ethers, cyclic lactones, vinyl ether and polyacetals. Specified inactivators are sodium carbonate, potassium carbonate, sec-sodium phosphate and sodium formate at least part of these, e.g. 10 to 80% may be replaced by neutral inactivators, e.g. the alkali metal and alkaline earth metal chlorides and fluorides. The inactivators may be sprayed into the melting zone in the form of dilute solutions in e.g. water or alcohols. The molten polymer may be conveyed through the vacuum zone within a period of sixty seconds and through a plurality of degassing zones arranged in series while a solution of a conventional costabilizer may be added after the polymer has passed through at least one degassing zone.
