1,118,657. Apparatus for effecting surgical operations under improved aseptic conditions. W. IRWIN. 5 April, 1967 [7 April, 1966], No. 15547/66. Heading A5R. [Also in Division B4] Apparatus for effecting surgical operations under improved aseptic conditions comprises a chamber 10 adapted to cover an operating table or to be applied to a patient's body in a position surrounding the operative area having sides 11 provided with apertures 12 sealed by gloves 13 and an inlet connection 14 and an outlet connection 15 for permitting sterile gas to circulate through the chamber. The chamber may be formed from a transparent material e.g. polythene or may be provided with a window for viewing the operation area. It may also be supported by a frame positioned either internally or externally of the chamber. Alternatively, the chamber, if made of plastics sheet material, may be supported in its distended position by internal gas pressure. A removable plug 16 may be provided in an end wall of the chamber to enable any sterile materials or instruments to be passed into the chamber and an elongated tube or container 17 may be provided at the lower portion of the chamber for receiving waste material. In use, the lower part of the chamber may be adhesively attached to the area where an incision is to be made and inflated by admission of sterile gas The surgeon then places his or her hands in the gloves and makes an incision through the chamber wall and skin.
