1,118,115. Preventing lubricant escape in traverse mechanisms. GIDDINGS & LEWISFRASER Ltd. 30 Dec., 1966 [2 March, 1966], No. 9087/66. Heading D1J. A traverse mechanism includes a cylindrical rotatable cam 1 mounted within an enclosed casing 6, a follower 3 for the cam pivotally mounted on a first arm 4 which is rigidly mounted on a shaft 5 extending into the casing, and a second arm 7 rigidly mounted on the shaft 5 outside the casing and carrying a yarn guide 8, a seal being provided between the casing and the shaft. Due to the total enclosure of the cam 1 and arm 4 no lubricant present in sump 11 can escape and soil the yarn and no dirt can enter casing to foul the bearings and the helical grooves 10 of cam 1. In the embodiment of Figure 1, the follower is also slidably mounted on arm 4 with the bearing 16 for the shaft 5 rigidly mounted in the casing. In preferred embodiments, the shaft 5 is journalled in a horizontally slidable bearing 19 and either linear motion of the cam follower relative to the arm is prevented (Fig. 3, not shown) or the arm is extended and a second follower 20, positioned directly beneath guide 8, is pivotally attached to the extension and slides in a slide 21 arranged parallel to the axis of the package 18. The preferred embodiments reduce the paths followed by the guides 8 to paths more closely parallel to the package axis.
