Abstract
1,118,001. Cooling unspecified articles. CROMPTON PARKINSON Ltd. 14 March, 1966 [22 March, 1965], No. 12050/65. Heading F4U. [Also in Division B3] A chamber 5 contains a nozzle 8 which directs a jet of coolant against a relatively thin, heat conducting wall 6 of the chamber, the chamber also having an outlet or drainage tube 12 but being otherwise air-tight. In use, the wall 6 is placed in contact with a metal surface 1 to be cooled. This may for example be the wall of an aluminium or stainless steel pan to one side of which a stud 2 is to be welded or brazed, the cooling chamber 5 being placed at the other side of the wall to remove heat arising from the welding or brazing operation. The coolant may as shown be a liquid (e.g. water) or it may be a gas such as air. Where a liquid is used, the air space above the liquid level in the chamber prevents this level from rising above the jet outlet. The heat conducting wall 6 may be made of a flexible material so that the wall adapts itself to the contour of the surface 1 when pressed thereinto by spring pressure. The vessel 5 may be formed as a metal bellows (Fig. 2) which itself constitutes the loading spring, or separate springs (not shown) may be used.
