Abstract
1117843 Gas turbine plant ROLLS ROYCE Ltd 22 March 1967 [25 Feb 1966] 8544/66 Heading F1G [Also in Division G3] Apparatus for preventing the formation of ice on a surface - such as the surface of the air intake of a gas turbine engine - comprises an electrical heating element disposed adjacent the surface but insulated therefrom by a layer of neoprene and a temperature sensitive resistor device disposed adjacent the heating element and which extends throughout the whole surface area of the heating element, the temperature sensitive device and the heating element being insulated from one another by means of a further layer of neoprene. The heating element and the temperature sensitive device may both be formed by a sinuous pattern of nickel foil. The temperature sensitive device controls the supply of energy to the heating element by the increase with temperature of its resistance, with or without the aid of a magnetic amplifier.
