Abstract

1,108,124. Electric resistance heating. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. 19 May, 1966, No. 22290/66. Heading H5H. [Also in Division F1] A temperature reponsive device comprises inner and outer casings 25, 23, an electric heating element 27 disposed in the space 26 between the casings which is filled with insulating material and a temperature sensing device in the inner casing which controls the supply to an electric heater to prevent overheating. The sensing device may be a metal bar of lower coefficient of expansion than that of the casing 25 or a Pt resistance wire connected to a Si rectifier. The device is mounted near a gas turbine air intake (see Division F1) and controls cyclically and continuously energized deicing heaters disposed between neoprene layers on the intake surface. The thickness of insulation and connection of the heaters with the element 27 produce a temperature difference between the casings proportional to that between the intake surface and one deicing heater.
