The speed of a synchronous motor M is regulated by controlling the firing times of controlled rectifiers connecting the motor in groups 1, 2, 3 to an alternating supply by use of first pulses derived from the supply and second pulses, obtained from a derivation circuit 5 connected to the output of a rotor position sensor 4, and occurring at the time of each change in the output of sensor 4. The control system 6 comprises a first series of gates (depicted in block form in Fig. 2, not shown) arranged to pass the first series of (phase adjustable) pulses to the appropriate group 1, 2 or 3 of controlled rectifiers depending on the output of the rotor position sensor 4 and a second series of gates arranged to pass the second series of pulses from the derivation circuit 5, via one of the first gates, to one of the rectifiers connected to a respective one of phases R, S, T, under control of current transformers AR, AS, AT, i.e. depending on which of the phases is supplying current at that instant. The motor may run at super-synchronous speed and may be used for running-up and synchronizing hydroalternators, compensators or gas-turbines.
