Abstract

1,117,812. Beam lights for aircraft. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. 16 March, 1966 [6 Jan., 1965; 19 July, 1965], Nos. 646/65 and 30514/65. Heading F4R. A flashing beacon lamp for mounting flush with the surface of an aircraft consists of a boxlike housing 6 having a window 22 behind which is mounted a reflector 9 for rotation about an axis at right angles to the direction of emergence of reflected light from a lamp 1, the window being shorter than the reflector and the latter so shaped that the reflected light forms a substantially parallel beam at the centre and converges at opposite sides so that substantially all the reflected light passes through the window. The reflector is mounted on a ring member 12 running between ball races 10, 11 carried by a support and is driven through a pinion 18 engaging teeth on the ring 12, by a motor 19. Parallel screens 26 on each side of the lamp ensure a sharp cut-off of the light beam. To utilize the light during the periods when the reflector is facing away from the window, the interior of the housing may have one, two or more plane or curved reflectors at the sides, e.g. two plane mirrors tilted in opposite directions with an untilted plane mirror between them.
