Abstract

1,117,487. Treating charge of I.C. engines. E. BRUSELAT. Sept. 20, 1965 [Sept. 18, 1964; Nov. 3, 1964; Feb.23, 1965], No.40103/65. Heading F1B. In an I.C. engine, additional air or crankcase gases or any gas containing oxygen is introduced into the induction pipe 16 downstream of the engine throttle valve (not shown) through orifices 21, inclined baffles 20 promoting mixing of the added gas with the fuel-air charge. A valve 36, regulating the quantity added, is actuated by a cam 40 attached to the throttle spindle 41 so that at small throttle openings (the position shown) a small quantity of additional gas flows through a delivery duct 31, a duct 32 being blocked, and for progressively larger throttle openings the quantity first increases sharply as duct 32 is opened, then decreases uniformly as a tapered portion 36c of the valve gradually occludes duct 32 and finally drops to zero at full throttle opening when valve portion 36b blocks both ducts 31 and 32. A bifurcated pipe may extend to the centre of the manifold 16 to provide two further inclined outlets for the additional gas, Fig. 7 (not shown). In a modification, Fig. 9 (not shown), the cam 40 is replaced by a linkage between the throttle and the valve, the latter having a conical end and being axially adjustable in the additional gas delivery conduit. In an engine having two parallel inlet ducts, Fig. 14 (not shown), the supply of additional gas to each is controlled by one and the same conically ended valve.
