Abstract

111,706. Blatchford, C. A. Dec. 5, 1916. Chest-expanders.-Harness for supporting artificial arms and controlling their movements is secured to a pad 11 placed under one of the arm-pits of the wearer; the pad is formed preferably of stiff leather with a thickened moistureabsorbing-edge 12. The arrangement of the harness depends upon the nature of the amputation and of the artificial arm worn ; in one form, Fig. 2, intended for amputation between half an inch and three inches below the axilla, one control strap 13 is connected at the back to the harness 19 which comprises a shoulder loop 18, cross straps 19, 20, and an elastic member 21. In another form, Fig. 7, for amputation just below the elbow, a single strap 16 controls the hand and is adjustably strapped at back and front of the pad; the harness in this case consists of two shoulder loops 18, 24 and a cross-strap 25. A modification is described for amputations at the shoulder, wherein a shoulder-cap carrying a complete artificial arm is kept in place by straps and elastic connexions secured to the pad, which is worn beneath the opposite arm-pit. The controls are also anchored thereto, either directly, or indirectly through the harness.
