Abstract

<PICT:1117024/C1/1> A method of making a seal for an electric discharge device, particularly a stem preassembly therefor comprises sealing an intermediate fused quartz tube 211 peripherally at one end at some intermediate point along the length of an outer fused quartz tube 18 and then peripherally sealing an inner fused quartz tube 23 to the other end of the intermediate tube 211 and extending said inner tube 23 back through tube 211, the free end of inner tube 23 being closed at 25, hermetically sealing a molybdenum thimble 14 to a tungsten rod 5 extending through the thimble, the thimble having a "feathered" edge, inserting the thimble rod assembly into the stem pre-assembly in such a fashion that the rod 5 passes inside the inner tube 23 and the thimble 14 passes between the outer tube 18 and intermediate tube 211, applying a vacuum within the outer tube against the closed end of the thimble and applying a gas pressure to the other side thereof, and applying heat around the outer tube 18 progressively from the closed end of the thimble to its feathered edge so that both the intermediate tube and the outer tube are caused to collapse and seal against the feathered edge of the thimble 14 and also to collapse the inner tube on to and to seal it with the tungsten rod 5. So that the seals only occur at the feathered edge of the thimble and at the end of the inner tube, molybdenum foils 27, 30, 32 are placed between the thimble, rod and quartz tubes. The thimble has a length to diameter ratio of at least 1.75:1. The outer and inner quartz tubes are cut off beyond the thimble seal and a quartz-glass capillary (40), (Fig. 9, not shown), is joined on to the end of the outer tube to provide support for the tungsten rod.
