Abstract
1,116,723. Consuming noxious vapours. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. 24 Aug., 1965, No. 36367/65. Heading F4B. [Also in Division F1] Combustion apparatus for waste gases, e.g. from the incomplete incineration of refuse or from a varnish cooker, comprises a heat exchange unit 80 formed with alternate groups of mutually perpendicular passages 79 and 81, the gases flowing from inlets 74 through passages 79 to a combustion chamber 82 where they are ignited, the products of combustion passing through passages 81 to outlets 88. A gas burner 90 is provided in the combustion chamber. Three of the four comer edges of the parallelepipedal unit 80 are located in contact with the apparatus wall 84 by brackets 95, thus sealing inlet and outlet plenums 76 and 86 and the combustion chamber from each other. In modifications, Figs. 1-7 (not shown), primarily intended for after-burning I.C. engine exhaust gases, the gas burner is replaced by a spark-plug or a glow plug. The apparatus may include two heat exchange units arranged in series or parallel. Turbulence-promoting baffles may be provided in the combustion chamber. Extra air may be mixed with the waste gases either upstream of the apparatus or in the combustion chamber. Supplementary fuel may be added to the gases.
