Abstract

1,116,319. Processing radioactive waste. SOCIETE EUROPEENNE POUR LE TRAITEMENT CHIMIQUE DES COMBUSTIBLES IRRADIES EUROCHEMIC. 18 Nov., 1966 [7 April, 1966], No. 51682/66. Heading G6R. The radioactive waste produced when the canning of irradiated nuclear fuel elements is removed by dissolving in an alkali or acid solution, is solidified and placed in a container. The wastes contain water solutions of a fluoride and/or a sulphate and are mixed with lime to neutralize free acid and to precipitate the free fluoride. Water is removed by evaporation and the resultant slurry hardens. The hard waste is immersed in bitumen and placed within a metal or concrete container. Resins may be used in place of the bitumen.
