Abstract

1,211,816. Decontaminating radioactive liquids. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 30 June, 1969 [9 July, 1968], No. 32839/69. Heading G6R. Radioactive liquid effluent obtained by the chemical decanning of irradiated nuclear fuel elements is decontaminated by forming in succession in the liquid precipitates of ferrous sulphide and hydroxide barium sulphate, and the ferrocyanide of a transition element of atomic number 21 to 29, and then separating the solid material from the decontaminated liquid. The liquid should be adjusted to a pH of 7 to 9. Magnesium-zirconium alloy cans are dissolved in sulphuric or nitric acid; when using nitric acid, nitrous compounds in the effluent liquid are first oxidized by adding potassium permanganate, and then sulphate ions are added before forming the precipitates.
