Abstract

<PICT:1116302/C6-C7/1> Aluminium or magnesium metal alloy bands are heat-treated by reeling each band 2 into an oven 4, bringing to the appropriate treatment temperature whilst in reel form 5, and chilling at a predetermined rate as it leaves the oven during unwinding from the reel e.g. by cold dry or damp air and/or jets of water. The oven may have a heating-up zone 13 provided with burners 11, 12, a compensating zone 18 provided with slotted gas or air jets 17, and a heat-retaining zone for the reel 5. Instead of hot combustion gases, heating may be effected with electrically-heated air or inductively. Prior to reeling into the oven, the band, unwound from an external reel, may be passed through a draw-off and retaining device, then through apparatus for regulating the draft of the band to subject the cold portion thereof to a higher tension than that of the hot portion.
