Abstract

[Also in Division E2] A garment suspender of the button and loop type comprises in combination a length of elastic web 1, a button 2, the base of which is permanently attached by welding to the lower end portion of the web and a button loop 4 having an upper end portion secured by welding to the web in such a position as to permit of engagement of the button with the loop. To permit the welding at least some of the threads of the elastic web and/or the material of the button and button loop must be thermoplastic; the warp threads of the elastic web are made of an elastomeric material and polyurethane and natural and artificial rubber are mentioned; the weft threads are made of a non-elastomeric material and cotton, rayon, polyamide and polyvinyl chloride are mentioned; the thermoplastics mentioned for the button and button loop are polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, and nylon or other form of polyamide. In the construction shown, the the button loop is welded to the web by means of a flat tab 4C and the upper and lower end portions of the web are provided with transverse welds 3, 5, to permit the elastomeric threads running back into the body of the web; as shown, the base of the button is narrower than the web, but if desired it can be made as wide as the web, in which case the transverse weld 3 is omitted; the upper end portion of the web can either be sewn or welded to a garment, or it can be provided with a hook fitting which is either attached to the web by welding it directly to the web or it is attached to the web by forming a loop in the web by folding the end portion of the web back on itself and welding to the back face of the web by the transverse weld 5. The welds may be made by dielectric heating apparatus and can be made simultaneously if desired. The end portion of the web below the button can be trimmed by the welding apparatus to leave a sealed edge from which surface material can be torn away or cut through to any desired shape by hot knife or wire. Instead of being attached to a garment, the suspender can be attached to a garter.
