1,115,776. Combined buffer and draw gear. ZENTRALE ENTWICKLUNG UND KONSTRUKTION ZEK HYDRAULIK VEB. 21 Sept., 1965, No. 40219/65. Heading B7T. [Also in Division F2] If the housing 1<SP>1</SP> of a liquid spring in railway vehicle combined buff and draw gear is held stationary by limit stops and a buffing load is applied to the right-hand end of the gear shown, then a ram 5<SP>1</SP> is first moved by a surrounding yoke (not shown) to open valve 8<SP>1</SP> against pressure on the ram 5<SP>1</SP> or by a spring (not shown) providing communication between liquid chambers 16<SP>1</SP> and 15<SP>1</SP> via bores 21 and 22. When the load moves further then the plate 4 and the plunger 3<SP>1</SP> with its head 9<SP>1</SP> are moved into the chamber 16<SP>1</SP> to increase the resistance. The valve 8<SP>1</SP> may be a pressure reducing valve to alter the characteristics of the gear. If the housing 1<SP>1</SP> moves relatively to the plate 4 as in draw loading then the valve 8<SP>1</SP> is held closed by the pressure in chamber 16<SP>1</SP>, the ram 5<SP>1</SP> not being abutted and the chambers 15<SP>1</SP> and 16<SP>1</SP> remain separated from one another. Damping during draw loading can only be obtained it an additional damping plunger (not shown) is used. In the embodiment of Figs. 1-3 (not shown) the ram (5) does not extend to the surface of the plate 4 and is provided with a smaller area for the pressure to act upon than the valve (8) so that when the whole arrangement is compressed by the yoke (2) the valve (8) remains closed initially until the ram (5) reaches a position where it is flush with the surface of the plate 4. Further compression then moves the ram and opens the valve so that the chambers (15) and (16) are connected. Initial pressure is produced within the chamber (15) by adjustment of the screw (11).
