In a nuclear reactor, the pressure vessel is encased in glass filaments bonded in epoxy resin. In the event of a pressure vessel failure, the reactor coolant is retained together with those reactor members subjected to outwardly directed forces. A neutron absorber material may be located in the space between the bonded layer and the vessel so as to be absorbed into the coolant upon vessel fracture.
