Abstract

111,506. Baker, W. H. Nov. 23, 1916. Submarine vessels; armour.-A submarine vessel, designed to remain for long periods on the bottom of the sea, has the hull protected by an armoured outer shell spaced some distance from the hull and connected to it by webs adapted to yield under pressure. In the form shown in the Figs., the outer shell 37 is externally furrowed to facilitate the lodgment of mud, rocks, marine growths, &c., and is connected to the hull 11 by bent plates 39. The hull has wells 12 fitted with covers 13 and adapted to receive buoys 14 provided with cables 15 connected to winding apparatus 14a so that the buoys can be allowed to float on the surface suspending the vessel at a constant depth. A similar buoy 17 having its winding apparatus in the bottom of its well is adapted to be entered through doors 26 and is provided with ports 18 and a periscope 19 for observation purposes. The vessel is fitted with a screw propeller 28 driven by an electric motor 31 and accumulators 30 or by an internalcombustion engine 27 which also drives a dynamo 29, for charging the accumulators and for driving an air pump 32 and a water pump 33. The vessel has wheels 40 adapted to run on the sea bottom, has a diving compartment 21 fitted with hatch 22, and a cable compartment 23 for housing a cable 24 whereby communication is established with the shore or a surface vessel and, if desired, electrical energy supplied to the vessel. Oxygen reservoirs and apparatus for absorbing CO., are fitted. In a modified form, shown in Fig. 4, cylindrical armoured chambers 41 are provided for the crew and a docking space 42 is provided adapted to house a small auxiliary submarine 43.
