An ornamental article comprises a stiff framework of compressible material having a front face and a rear face, a plurality of inserts 12, 13, 14 removably mounted within openings in said framework and the front face of each insert being covered with decorative material 21, 26, 27, the decoratively covered inserts when glued together producing an attractive pictorial effect. In one construction the framework is made by cutting sections out of a base 10 the sections constituting the inserts 12, 13, 14 which after covering with the decorative material are reinserted into the openings produced in the base. In another construction the framework is made of integrally formed rings which provide the openings which can be of any desired shape and the inserts are separably formed. When the base is used, the material is for example cardboard, cork or expanded polystyrene and in the case of cork and polystyrene a layer of cardboard can be bonded to the cork or polystyrene to stiffen it. The decorative material can be textile fabric or metal foil and for each insert a piece of the foil or fabric is draped over the insert so that the margin of the fabric or foil piece hangs adjacent to the edges of the insert so that it is trapped between the insert and the framework when the insert is inserted into the opening from the rear; a wad 24 of resilient material such as a piece of cotton can, if desired, be placed between the foil or fabric and the front face of the insert to expand the foil or fabric forwardly. The decorative material could be a mass of multicoloured stone or glass chips held in place by a suitable adhesive or a mass of textile fibres heldin place by adhesive.
