Abstract

1,114,919. Handling radioactive fluid. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 15 Feb., 1967 [23 Feb., 1966], No. 7265/67. Heading B4Q. A container serving both for transporting radioactive fluid contained in a bottle 6 and for transfer of fluid from the bottle comprises a biological shielding member I in which the bottle is retained by a shielding plug 8 held by a cover 23. A sleeve 2 fixed to the member 1 is pivotally connected at 25 to a carrying handle 4, a locking detent 26 on the handle being alternatively engageable in hole 27 or 28 so that the bottle may be either upright, Fig. 1, for transport or inverted. Fig. 2, for transfer of the fluid. A plate 3 comprising parts 15, 16 is slidable within the sleeve 2 and biased by a spring 30. In the transport position struts 35 fixed to the part 16 abut an annular locking member 33 rotatable about the axis of the member 1 on the sleeve 2. By releasing screws 34 the member 33 may be rotated through a small angle to permit openings 36 thereby to become opposite the struts 35 so that the latter pass therethrough in the fluid transfer position. Hollow needles 13, 14 are secured to the part 15, needle 13 serving for connection to the atmosphere through ducts 17, 18 and needle 14 for the transfer of fluid. Plugs 31, 20 normally block the needle 14 and duct 18. To transfer the fluid the container is supported by means of the plate 3 on the vessel to receive the fluid shown in chain lines in Fig. 2. The member 33 is rotated to its unlocking position whereupon the weight of the shielding member 1 and sleeve 2 compress the spring 30 and the needles 13, 14 penetrate the closure seal 7 of the bottle.
