Abstract

Novel N - (3 - phenoxy - 2 - hydroxypropyl) succinimides of the formula <FORM:1113973/C2/1> wherein R is hydrogen, C1- 6 alkyl, C1- 6 alkoxy, halogen, trifluoromethyl, nitro, phenyl or styryl are made by mixing the appropriate 1,2-epoxy-3-aryloxypropane with succinimide preferably in the presence of an inert diluent and a basic catalyst, e.g. pyridine, the picolines or lutidines, quinoline, isoquinoline, quinaldine or lepidine, at a temperature of 50-250 DEG C. Suitably R may be a m-methyl-, butyl-, fluoro-, chloro- or bromo-, a p-methoxy-, phenyl- or styryl- or an o- or m-trifluoromethyl-substituent. 1,2 - Epoxy - 3 - phenyloxypropanes bearing a substituent R on the phenyl radical are made by reacting epichlorohydrin with the appropriate phenol in the presence of an alkali-metal hydroxide or piperidine.
