Abstract

1,113,782. Cartridge-actuated tools. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO. Ltd. 21 May, 1965 [23 May, 1964], No. 21382/64. Heading B4C. An explosive-actuated tool for driving anchoring members, such as nails, into hard material comprises a piston element 4 adapted to be returned to the same position relative to a body portion 2 for the firing of the next cartridge independent of the length of the nail and a resiliently mounted guide member 15 adapted to receive the nail and support a part of the piston. The piston is provided with a head 13 adapted to also enter a chamber 12 and abut a surface 22 when a nail has been inserted into the end 17 of the guide 15 and the latter pressed against the workpiece; the guide is loaded to the position shown by a spring. A cartridge ejector 23 is provided. In a modification (Fig. 3), the head (39) of the piston slides in a bush (38) secured in a body (31) to which a cap (44) is removably connected. A plunger 40 is slidable in the cap and is formed with a cartridge chamber at one end and a knob 41 at the other, which may be struck with a hammer. In a further modification, the cartridge chamber is formed in the piston head.
