[Also in Division G3] In a slip ring unit for a dynamo-electric machine, e.g. a 3-phase vehicle alternator, a pair of slip rings 18, 19 are embedded within a synthetic resin body 59 which may be mounted on the rotor shaft 44 and a fan 61 for cooling the machine is moulded integrally with the resin body. Terminals for connecting the slip rings to the rotor field coil 21 are mounted on the fan in lugs 62, 63 which engage slots (64, 65, Fig. 5, not shown), formed in the adjacent pole member 51 of the rotor so as to provide a mechanical drive between the fan and machine rotor. Alternatively, the lugs may be on the rotor and the slots on the fan. Cooling air is drawn through the alternator from 74 by the fan 61 on the slip ring unit and by an external fan 45 and is expelled via apertures 46. Mounted on an extension 55 of end plate 53 are rectifiers 76 and a voltage regulation circuit 75. Securing the stator plates is accomplished by clips 48 which are arranged within the cooling outlet apertures 46. Voltage regulation of the 3-phase alternator is provided by a transistorized circuit (Fig. 1, not shown), in which when the voltage of the battery connected to terminals (14, 16) rises above a certain level Zener diode (26) conducts and turns ON transistor (25) which cuts OFF transistor (29) so preventing current through the field winding (21) of the rotor. Transistors (25), (29) then oscillate at a rate depending on the current flowing through the Zener diode so as to provide pulses of current to the field winding. A thermistor (35) may be placed near the battery so as to compensate for temperature changes. Contact (82, Fig. 4, not shown), provides a connection for a warning lamp circuit.
