Abstract

1473097 Axial-flow fans SIMMS GROUP RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd 4 April 1974 [4 May 1973] 21448/73 Heading F1C [Also in Divisions G3 and H2] In a drive system for a I.C. engine cooling fan 11, comprising an electric motor 10 and a generator drivable by the engine to generate electrical power for the motor, means 15 are provided for controlling the excitation of a field winding 14 of the generator and thus the speed of the fan. The generator comprises a three-phase alternator 13 connected to the motor 10 via rectifier unit 12. The means 15 is responsive to engine coolant temperature and includes a thermally-actuated switch 36 in a potentiometer line connected across an accumulator 18. The switch is closed when the engine is cold so that a Zener diode 30 conducts and renders transistor 26 conductive to switch off transistor 22 and thus transistor 19 in series with the field winding 14. When the engine temperature reaches a certain value the switch 36 opens, whereby diode 30 and transistor 26 become non- conductive and thus allow the transistors 22, 19 to conduct to provide a field current through the winding 14 and operate the motor 10. As the alternator output increases a voltage is reached at which the diode 30 once more becomes conductive thereby switching off the transistors 22, 19 and current flow to the winding 14. The process is then repeated. The fan speed is settable by resistor 35. Fall in engine temperature closes the switch 36 and thus prevents fan operation until the engine temperature increases again. The resistor 34 may be replaced by a thermistor responsive to engine temperature so that when the switch 36 is open the fan speed is increased with increases in engine temperature. When a thermistor is used, the switch 36 may be omitted and an isolating switch provided between line 16 and accumulator 18.
