Abstract

A composition for sizing fibrous materials comprises (a) a compound of the formula <FORM:1113039/C3/1> wherein R is a hydrophobic organic group, R1 is a hydrogen atom, or a methyl or chloromethyl group, n is 0, 1 or 2, and X is a halogen atom; and (b) a polyalkyleneimine having 2 or 3 carbon atoms in each alkylene group. It is preferred that X is a chlorine or bromine atom and that the ratio by weight of (a) to (b) is from 1:10 to 10:1. Suitable hydrophobic organic groups are alkyl, alkenyl, alkyl-phenyl and alkylcycloalkyl groups, optionally containing inert substituents such as carboalkoxy, alkyloxy, aryloxy, arylalkyloxy, keto-(carbonyl), tertiary amide, halogens attached to aromatic carbon atoms, or non-aromatic heterocyclic groups. The polyalkyleneimines include the poly-(N-methylalkyleneimines) which are the polymerization products of N-methyl-ethyleneimine, N-methylpropyleneimine or mixtures thereof. The ingredients of composition may be combined in a solution or dispersion. Optional ingredients include alkali metal hydroxides and cationic starch.ALSO:Fibrous materials, such as textile and cellulose fibres, threads, yarns or fabrics, are sized by treatment with (a) a compound of the formula <FORM:1113039/D1-D2/1> wherein R is a hydrophobic organic group, R1 is a hydrogen atom, or a methyl or chloromethyl group, n is 0, 1, or 2, and X is a halogen atom; and (b) a polyalkyleneimine having 2 or 3 carbon atoms in each alkylene group. Suitable hydrophobic organic groups are alkyl, alkenyl, alkylphenyl and alkyl-cycloalkyl groups, optionally containing inert substituents such as carboalkoxy, alkyloxy, aryloxy, arylalkyloxy, keto (carbonyl), tertiary amide, halogens attached to aromatic carbon atoms, or non-aromatic heterocyclic groups. The polyalkyleneimines include the poly (N-methylalkyleneimines) which are the polymerisation products of N-methyl-ethyleneimine, N-methyl-propyleneimine or mixtures thereof. The ratio of (a) to (b) is pereferably from 1:10 to 10:1 by weight and the combined weight of (a) and (b) is preferably at least 0.1 per cent of the weight of the fibrous p material. The ingredients of the composition may be combined in one solution or dispersion and added to an anqueous fibrous slurry or pulp slurry, or they may be sprayed on to a fibrous mat. They may also be applied by tub sizing methods comprising passing the fibrous material through combined or separate solutions of the two ingredients. Optional additives are alkali metal hydroxides and cationic starch. The fibrous material may be subsequently dried to give a finished sized product.
