An apparatus for cooling a travelling web of film or a tow of artificial filaments consisting of a thermoplastic material and a plasticizer therefor comprises a conveyer belt 1 (Fig. 1) sloping upwards in the direction of travel of the web or tow and supported in a driven roller 2 and an idler roller 3. The web or tow, the temperature of which may previously have been passed through a heat treating duct, is pressed on to the upper run of the belt by the roller 4 and the web or tow is conveyed on the sloping operative upper run of the belt 1 through the tunnel 6 to which cooling air is supplied by a fan 7. Owing to the friction between the web or tow and the belt the latter is conveyed through the tunnel by the belt but the frictional force is opposed by the forces which cause the web or tow to contract as it is cooled by its passage through the tunnel. In addition to these contracting forces, which cause the web or tow to lag behind the travel of the belt through the tunnel, the component of the force of gravity which is parallel to the sloping upper run of the belt and acts in a direction opposite to the direction of travel of the upper run of the belt also opposes the frictional force between the web or tow and the belt and in consequence the strains retained in the web or tow after it has been cooled are reduced. The angle of upward inclination of the belt (in the direction of travel of the web or tow) may decrease gradually or stepwise in the direction of travel. In a modification illustrated in Fig. 2, the web or tow, immediately after leaving the belt 1 passes through the nip of a pair of rollers 9 and 10, the roller 9 being driven by the belt roller 3 in such a manner that its peripheral speed is slightly below the speed of the belt 1. The degree of longitudinal shrinkage of the web or tow is thereby positively controlled.
