Abstract

1,112,884. Casting composite pistons. SOCIETE FATA. 20 May, 1965 [27 May, 1964], No. 21468/65. Heading B3F. Electromagnetic carriers 1, 2 are used to transfer inserts 9 or (16, 16<SP>1</SP>), Fig. 6 (not shown), from a supply holder (15) to a core 18, Fig. 10, of a chill mould in which an I.C. engine piston is cast to incorporate the inserts. Each carrier comprises an electromagnet with a solenoid 4 in a box 1 with polepieces (5, 6) extending through a lid 2. Spring-loaded pins 7, 8 may also project through the lid 2 to locate in holes in the insert 9. They may be ferromagnetic extensions of the poles. A casting machine (12), Fig. 5 (not shown), has two pairs of jaws (13, 13<SP>1</SP>) and (14, 14<SP>1</SP>) which can be swung through a right angle from position (A) to position (B) and each jaw carries a carrier 1, 2. The holder (15) rises from a stack (17) of inserts (16, 16<SP>1</SP>) and the jaws 13, 13<SP>1</SP> &c. move together to pick up the inserts which have been raised. The jaws then open and transfer to the core 18, Fig. 10, before closing on it. The electromagnet is then de-energized and lifted away to leave the inserts (16, 16<SP>1</SP>) on the core.
