111,271. Jackson, C. E., Oldfield, T., and Oldfield & Schofield Co. Nov. 29, 1916. Variable-speed gearing.-In two-speed gearing of the type in which belts are shifted on the speed pulleys by parallel rods, an operating-lever is rocked to shift the rods by a knocking-off motion and by hand and is shifted laterally for selection by an auxiliary lever. Fast and loose pulleys 66, 67 driving the machine at different speeds are engaged by belts shifted by forks 69 carried on parallel rods 68 to which are secured lugs 75, 76 adapted to be engaged by an arm 74 on a lever 69a rocked by hand to throw in the required belt and by a knocking-off mechanism to stop the machine. A lever 77, carrying lugs 79 engaging a web 80 on the lever 69a, is rocked by hand to slide the lever 69a in its bearings and bring the arm 74 from the neutral position shown into engagement with the lug 76 appropriate to the speed required. The lugs 75 are so formed that, whatever the lateral position of the arm 74, its return necessarily returns the last-operated rod 68 to stop position.
