Abstract
111,166. Secord, F. A. Nov. 18, 1916. Drying-kilns; brick kilns; charges, cooling.- Relates to a process for drying clay-articles &c. by first cooling and then heating bv air currents. The process is carried out in a series of drying chambers 7, 8, 9, and after the drying is completed the materials or articles are transferred from the chamber 9 through an enclosed passage 19 to the kiln 18 in which they are baked. The kiln is surrounded by a casing 73 and is provided with a series of fire-grates one of which is shown at 74. The kiln and its casing may be heated by the hot air used in the drying process by admitting it through the pipes 42, 50, 75, and after the baking the charge may be cooled by passing cold air from a chamber 28 connected to a refrigerator 21 :hrough the pipes 42, 50, 76 to the kiln and its casing. Hot air from the furnace may be utilised for drying by passing it through the pipes in a reverse direction. A pipe 67 serves for the admission of brine and ammonia to the kiln.
