[Also in Divsion B5] A device for compacting cut tobacco to a rectangular blockshape comprises two perpendicular fixed walls 3, 4 extending upwardly from two sides of an aperture 5 in a plate 1, and two hinged walls 6, 8, the wall 6 being rectangular in shape and hinged to the plate 1 at 7 (Fig. 3), and the wall 8 being trapezium-shaped and hinged to the plate 1 at (9), Fig. 4 (not shown). An additional fixed wall 11 is curved so as to maintain contact with the wall 8 as it moves. In operation, tobacco is dropped into the hopper formed by the plates 3, 4, 6, 8, 11, and the plates 8 and 6 successively moved to a vertical position to compress the tobacco to rectangular section. A plunger 15 then descends to force the tobacco through the aperture 5 and compress it into a packet P carried on a movable platform 27. Movement of the walls 6, 8 and platform 27 may be synchronized by levers 22, 24, 25, 30, 32 and cams 20, 35 seen in Fig. 3.
