Abstract

Emulsions suitable for undersealing motor vehicles comprise 1-9% of a specified clay and 20-70% of bituminous material dispersed in an aqueous phase of pH 6-8. The clay is an aluminium magnesium hydrosilicate, e.g. a paligorskite or attapulgite, and has a mean particle size of 0.1m , a specific surface area of 210 sq.m./g.m. and needle-shaped crystallites. The bituminous material may be a petroleum distillate. Preferably 15% graphite is included in the composition. Additional materials which may be present are wetting agents e.g. sodium tripolyphosphates, adhesive agents e.g. organic amines, corrosion inhibitors e.g. fatty amine amide compounds, oleyl sarcoside, and sodium nitrate, and in the Examples (1) isopropyl alcohol (2) isopropyl alcohol and KOH are additionally present.
