Abstract
A composition suitable for coating and laminating sheet materials, which is thixotropic and has a viscosity of 100-10,000,000 centipoises when measured at 220-270 DEG F. with a rotational viscometer at a spindle speed of less than 10 r.p.m. is produced by subjecting a mixture, comprising 35-96.5 parts of a wax base, 3-30 parts of an inorganic hydrous adsorbent powder, and 1/2 -15 parts of a nitrogenous surface activator which is not an amine or amine salt and which contains an alkyl radical of at least 8 carbon atoms, to such conditions that the water of hydration of the adsorbent powder is expelled, for example by heating to 220-400 DEG F. with vigorous stirring. Suitable surface activators include alkyl quarternary ammonium salts, fatty acid amides, for example the amides of tallow acids or fatty acids derived from coconut oil, of hydrogenated derivatives of such acids. The hydrous adsorbent powder may be attapulgite, fuller's earth, hectorite, illite,saponite, bauxite, a montmorrilonite clay, alumina, magnesium aluminium silicate, silica gel or a synthetic zeolite. The wax base may be a microcrystalline wax with or without a minor amount of paraffin wax. Numerous other natural and synthetic waxes may be employed. A large number of other additives are disclosed.
